Why Are Grounding Transformers Needed?
Grounding transformers establish a ground path for either an ungrounded wye or a delta-connected system. Typically, grounding transformers are employed in the following situations:
- They can serve as a metering point for measuring faults.
- They help limit the magnitude of transient over-voltages that can occur during a re-striking ground fault.
- They may feature a low-voltage auxiliary winding that enables them to function as a local power supply for the substation.
- They allow for the connection of phase-to-neutral loads when required.
- By providing a low-impedance path to the ground, they can help to maintain the system neutral at or close to ground potential.
- They are utilized in wind farms for fault protection on ungrounded cables.
- They can provide a source of ground-fault current in the event of line-to-ground faults.
